Shale Reservoirs: Going Global - A Workshop on International Venturing
March 29, 2010, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Fort Worth Omni Hotel
Earn: Professional Development Hours (Equal to One (1) Continuing Education Credit (CEU)
Introduction:
Now that shale resource development is well underway in North America, the next wave in shale reservoir identification, evaluation and development will take place abroad. This 4-hour workshop focuses on the resource and business opportunities outside of Western Europe and North America.
Presentors:
• Usman Ahmed, CEO and Co-founder of Reservoir IntelliLogic LLC (RIL)
• Dr. Selim Hannan, President and Partner of RIL
What you will learn:
-- Future worldwide energy demand and the role of shale reservoirs
-- Transitioning from U.S. shale reservoirs to global shale reservoirs
-- Shale reservoirs outside North America (includes maps by individual continent)
-- Technology to better characterize, model and optimize production from shales
-- Shale reservoir development: prioritization of technology
-- Marketing: pore to pipeline to user, and the impact of hydrocarbon prices
-- Geopolitical and social issues and their impact on shale development
Who should attend:
Company Executives
Exploration Managers
Engineers
Geoscientists
Government Officials
Asset Managers
Asset Development Managers
Business Development Managers
Other professionals involved with shale plays and / or unconventional reservoirs in general.
Abstract
In previous exploration and development studies performed in various worldwide basins from the 1960s to early 2000s, most of the targeted sandstone and carbonate formations might not have flowed any gas or oil, but the underlying Devonian, Silurian or Cretaceous shale formations did show, or might have indicated, potential for hydrocarbon shows. These shale formations are very significant laterally and vertically (huge thickness).
In some parts of Africa, such formations also have tectonic connection to North America in the past. Confirmation of the actual potential will require additional evaluation and pilot production to determine if the hydrocarbons trapped in these source rocks can be produced in commercial quantities.
This workshop will highlight some of the potential asset bases and locations, and show examples of the work that has been carried out to pinpoint hydrocarbon potentials in these source shale rocks.
Examples will be presented that use geological, geochemistry, geophysical and petrophysical data to infer the potential of shale hydrocarbons in the various basins under consideration.
The reservoir, drilling, production and economic aspects of producing gas from such shales are also covered. Case studies from North America (the U.S. in particular) will illustrate the application of the overall shale gas evaluation, development and economic optimization process for the various continents.
Special impacts of socio-economic factors of shale gas transportation and marketing are also covered.
Faculty
Usman Ahmed is CEO and co-founder of Reservoir IntelliLogic LLC (RIL), Friendswood, Texas, a consulting firm that specializes in unconventional hydrocarbon business around the world. He retired in 2009 after a long career with Schlumberger, and was a Distinguished SPE Lecturer. Ahmed is familiar with more than 30 major oil and gas centers. He has more than 50 publications, textbook and patents and holds BS and MS degrees in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University.
Dr. Selim Hannan is president and partner of RIL. He is a diversified professional engineer with background in geosciences and business management. During his nearly two and a half decades in the energy industry, he worked in several countries in the engineering and geological aspects of conventional and unconventional oil and gas development.
