CBM, Tight Gas and More: Developing Non-Shale Unconventional Gas Resources

CBM, Tight Gas and More: Developing Non-Shale Unconventional Gas ResourcesThere is more to gas resources than shale. This panel focuses on a comparison of North American CBM plays, the booming gas plays of East Texas, the Rockies, and the Granite Wash.

  • Estimated recoverable reserves per well by operator in the Cherokee Basin are 130 Mcf/d, Quest Resources; 150 Mcf/d, Admiral Bay Resources; 212 Mcf/d, Layne Christensen; and 140 Mcf/d, Petrol Oil & Gas, says Chris Ryan, vice president, corporate development, for Admiral Bay Resources. The eastern half of the Cherokee Basin is currently the most productive.
  • The Mancos shale's gross thickness is 3,500 feet, compared with 100-500 in the Barnett. Gas in place in the Mancos is 280-350 Bcf per square mile with a recovery factor of 5%-15%, the Barnett's is 140-160 and 8%-15%, says Michael Decker, chief operating officer, Gasco Energy Inc.
  • Granite Wash thickness ranges from 50-400 feet and has nine potential benches, says Kamil Tazi, vice president, engineering and planning, for Cordillera Energy Partners III. IP ranges from 1-4 MMcfe/d; EUR is 0.5-2.5 Bcfe per well.
  • Deep Bossier wells in East Texas have had an average production increase of 25% from the third to the fourth quarter of 2008 and this is expected to increase sequentially by more than 38% in first-quarter 2009, says Russ Porter, chairman, president and CEO of Gastar Exploration Inc.
